Westerner Park’s New Ice Plant Keeps Red Deer’s Hockey Tradition Strong
November 12, 2025
Westerner Park is proud to announce the completion of a major facility upgrade with the installation of a new ice plant at the Marchant Crane Centrium. The $1.5 million project, funded equally through a Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant and the Westerner Foundation, ensures the long-term sustainability of the Centrium and supports the future of ice sports and events in Central Alberta.
The new ice plant replaces the original 32-year-old system and was relocated outdoors to enhance safety. The upgraded plant is also more energy-efficient, reducing environmental impact while improving reliability. Following an extensive review and tours of other facilities across Alberta, relocating the plant to the southeast corner of the Marchant Crane Centrium was determined to be the most efficient and responsible solution.
“This project was an important step in keeping the Marchant Crane Centrium strong for the community,” said Shelly Flint, CEO of Westerner Park. “Our partnership with the Red Deer Rebels and the support of both CFEP and the Westerner Foundation made it possible. Together, we’re ensuring Central Alberta continues to have a great place to gather, compete, and cheer — that’s what community is all about.”
The project was completed on schedule and in time for the 2025 Red Deer Rebels season, marking another significant investment in maintaining safe, reliable, and energy-efficient facilities at Westerner Park. The new system provides a more consistent, reliable ice surface for players, fans, and community events year-round.
Much of the work on the project was completed by Central Alberta-based trades and suppliers, keeping investment close to home and supporting the local economy. This project reflects Westerner Park’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, modern, and welcoming spaces for community events, sports, and entertainment.
“Red Deer has a proud hockey tradition,” said Merrick Sutter, Executive Vice President, Red Deer Rebels. “The Marchant Crane Centrium has been home to so many great moments. Seeing this kind of investment ensures hockey—and the community that supports it—remains strong for years to come.”
