September 30, 2009 marked the end of a very prosperous year for Westerner Park. Highlights of the year included completion of Phases 1 and 2 of the Strategic Development Plan. Work in these phases included the opening of the new Donald Administration Building, the addition of 580 new parking stalls, reconfiguration of traffic flows and construction of the new Northwest Gate.
Our commitment to 'keeping Westerner Park green' continued with the planting of 255 new trees and 1,200 new shrubs and the introduction of green power from renewable resources for Westerner Days Fair & Exposition. As one of the few Canadian Fairs and Expositions currently using renewable electricity, we have a reason to be proud and will continue working to find ways of reducing our ecological footprint.
Our annual Westerner Days Fair & Exposition was once again a success, attracting near-record crowds and further solidifying our reputation as central Alberta's premiere event destination. During the year, we hosted approximately 1,500 events that ran over 2,300 event days, welcoming about 1.5 million visitors through the gates.
This year our new Westerner Park graphic identity, including an updated logo, was also unveiled. In speaking with central Albertans, we found that people view Westerner Park as much more than an event place; it is a place of celebration. To reflect that identity we've introduced a new tag line: Your Destination for Celebration™.
2009 was truly a year to celebrate!
