City of Red Deer and Westerner Park Sign 50 Year Land Lease Agreement

The City of Red Deer and Westerner Park Sign 50 Year Land Lease Agreement City of Red Deer Mayor, Morris Flewwelling and Westerner Park President, Wendy Barnes signed a 50 year land lease agreement during the Westerner Park Annual General Meeting held on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. The lease agreement has an extension option of 25 years.

The total land being leased by Westerner Park amounts to 320 acres, 35 of which will be used for the Oxbows Off Leash Dog Park, created by The City this past Fall. In the previous land lease agreement signed on March 4, 1980, Westerner Park leased 115 acres of land.

The Strategic Development Plan, adopted by the Westerner Park Board of Directors in January 2008, assumes an aggressive regional strategy that captures the possibility of growth in central Alberta. The Plan not only includes the development of new facilities and the expansion of current facilities but it also includes the addition of more space to the
site. The new land lease agreement secures the space outlined in the Strategic Development Plan.

As of right now, the land will be “passive” green space but will eventually be connected by walkway to the Piper Creek walking trails, the Oxbows Off Leash Dog Park and other Westerner Park facilities.
