Strategic Development Plan: Phase 1 & 2 Complete

With work complete on Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Strategic Development Plan, Westerner Park looks like a new site. Phase 1 of the Plan included the construction of the Donald Administration Building, the expanded 19th Street entrance and the new gates. Also completed in this phase were the roads, curbs, parking lots, sidewalks, lighting and landscaping.

The Donald Administration Building is located in view of the 19th Street entrance to the site and outside the new gate. The building features 13,000 sq ft of space and is home to the administration staff. The building was possible due to a $1.5 million generous donation made to Westerner Park by life volunteers’ and past presidents’ Jack and Joan Donald of Red Deer.

Phase 2 of the Plan commenced with the removal of the shrubs and trees on the North West side of the site. With a clean slate, work then began on the reconfiguration of the parking lot, the addition of 580 new parking stalls and the new entrance off 49th Avenue (South West Gate). To replace the ones removed, approximately 255 new trees and 1,200 new shrubs were planted throughout the site. The third Phase includes the relocation of the Chalet, reshaping of the Ampitheatre, realignment of Pioneer Park and the construction of the Pedestrian Promenade. A start date for Phase 3 has not yet been established and will depend largely on the availability of capital resources.
