At Westerner Park, we feel strongly that in order to honour the past, we need to have a plan for the future. That's why we've embarked on a bold and innovative long-term redevelopment project.
In May of 2008, our Board of Directors approved a Strategic Development Plan that outlines an exciting new vision, acting as the blueprint for Westerner Park's growth over the next 40 years.
In 2009, we proudly completed Phases 1 and 2 of the Strategic Development Plan, opening several great new facilities and outdoor spaces.
On June 16, 2011, Westerner Park President, Michael Donlevy, in association with the Hon. Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, The City of Red Deer Mayor, Morris Flewwelling, and Red Deer County Mayor, Jim Wood announced during a press conference at the ENMAX Centrium, the total amount of funding secured for the plans for the ENMAX Centrium's expansion project.
Total grant funding for this $3.5 million project will come from the Province of Alberta's Community Facility Enhancement Program ($1.75 million), The City of Red Deer ($1 million), and Red Deer County ($500,000). Westerner Park will make up any shortfalls in the total construction cost.
The groundbreaking of the ENMAX Centrium Expansion Project will take place on April 16, 2012 and is estimated to be completed by the 2012/2013 Red Deer Rebels hockey season.
